The technical side breaks more often than people expect: audits suggest roughly three quarters of sites using hreflang carry at least one markup error. A second language isn’t “add a translator widget” — it’s a separate structure, and it’s cheaper to plan at the start than to bolt on a year later.

We’ve written more than once that plans to enter other markets belong in the structure from day one — both in the piece on website formats and in the one on the development process. Time to cover it properly.

What the Research Says About Buyers and Language

The 2020 CSA Research survey is one of the few in this area with a described methodology: 8,709 verified respondents across 29 countries, screened down from nearly 32,000, with filters against low-quality answers.

Three figures from it are worth keeping:

76% prefer to buy a product whose information is presented in their own language.

40% won’t buy from sites in other languages at all — not “buy less often,” but won’t buy.

75% are more likely to return to a brand whose customer support speaks their language.

That last point usually gets ignored: the site gets translated while emails, proposals and messenger replies stay in one language. Half the job.

When a Second Language Is Genuinely Needed

Not always. Before budgeting, it’s worth answering honestly whether the demand exists.

Situation

Second language needed?

Clients already write to you in another language

Yes, demand is confirmed

You sell services for export

Yes, English at minimum

Analytics shows noticeable foreign traffic

Worth checking where from and on which queries

“We’d like to reach Europe someday”

No, not without a specific market

A competitor did it and we want to as well

No, that isn’t an argument

The cheapest way to test demand is your own analytics: which countries people arrive from and what they do on the site. We covered how to build those views in the piece on website metrics.

The second way is to count enquiries. If somebody writes to you in another language twice a year, full localisation won’t pay for itself.

Three Ways to Organise Language Versions

This decision is made once and changed at great expense, so it’s worth settling before launch.

Structure

Example

Characteristics

Subdirectory

site.com/en/

Simplest to maintain, domain authority stays shared. The working choice for most

Subdomain

en.site.com

More flexible technically, but authority accumulates separately

Separate domain

site.de

Strongest signal for a specific country and the most expensive: SEO from scratch for each

For most companies adding an English version, a subdirectory is the optimal option. Separate country domains make sense when you’re seriously entering a specific market with a local entity, local support and a local ad budget.

hreflang: What Breaks Most Often

hreflang is the markup that tells a search engine: this page is in Ukrainian, here’s its English counterpart, show each person the right one. Without it Google may surface the wrong version or treat the pages as duplicates.

The rule broken most often is stated plainly in Google’s documentation: if page X links to page Y, page Y must link back to page X. The links have to be bidirectional. One-directional markup simply gets ignored — meaning you think it’s there while functionally it isn’t.

The rest of the common failures:

No self-reference. A page must point to itself as well, not only to other languages.

Wrong codes. Language and region get confused —
uk
is the Ukrainian language, while
ua
isn’t a language code at all.

Links to non-canonical URLs. hreflang points at one URL, the canonical tag at another.

No x-default. The fallback version for people whose language matches none of yours.

Markup in several places at once — in the HTML and in the sitemap, with discrepancies between them.

Our Own Example of How This Breaks Quietly

A telling story from this very site. English versions of articles were published, the language flag was set in the database, and everything looked correct in the settings. But a check revealed that some English material physically lived on Ukrainian URLs — no language prefix, no hreflang, no link to the original. To a search engine those were simply English-language pages inside a Ukrainian section, competing with their own originals instead of complementing them. It’s impossible to spot by eye: the admin panel displayed everything correctly, and only a direct database query plus checking the live URLs exposed the gap between what was recorded and what was actually served. The fix took minutes, but the problem had lived on the site for months.

The moral is simple: multilingual setups need checking on live pages, not in the admin panel. A plugin can consider everything configured while the visitor and the crawler see something else entirely.

Translation Isn’t Localisation

The most common shortcut is taking the original text and running it through a translator. Technically a language version appears; commercially it won’t work.

What actually has to change:

Prices and currency. A local-currency price list on an English page is unreadable to a foreign buyer.

Examples and context. References to local services, banks or competitors mean nothing to a foreign audience.

Keywords. People in another country search using different phrasing, and a literal translation of a query is often something nobody types.

Legal details. Forms, data-processing consents and return terms differ by market.

Formats. Dates, phone numbers, units of measurement, name order.

In Netloria’s practice, English versions are built as adaptations rather than translations: the same structure, but examples, prices and arguments rewritten for a different audience. It costs more than translation and performs considerably better.

What It Costs

There’s no direct answer, but there is a cost logic you can estimate against.

The technical part is one-off and relatively small: configuring the language plugin, URL structure, switcher and markup. The real money sits in content: every page, every service description, every blog article has to be written a second time. So the cost of a second language tracks the cost of your content, not the cost of development.

The third cost item, forgotten at the start, is maintenance. Every site update now has to be done twice: a new service, a new article, a price change. If nobody works on content continuously, within a year the second language becomes an outdated copy of the first — which is worse than not having it.

Reference figures for building the site itself are in our piece on corporate website cost — a language version is counted on top of those numbers, not instead of them.

What to Do About the Blog

The largest hidden cost in going multilingual is the blog. There are five or ten service pages, but articles accumulate into dozens over a few years, and translating all of them is usually both expensive and unnecessary.

The working approach is selectivity. Translate what actually brings traffic and closes commercial questions: pricing pieces, comparisons, buying guides. Leave locally-anchored topics in one language — they’ll do nothing for a foreign audience.

One technical nuance matters here: an article with no counterpart in the other language is fine. Google doesn’t require every page to have a pair; hreflang simply isn’t added where there’s no pair. Problems start when a pair supposedly exists but the markup doesn’t know about it — exactly the case described above from our own site.

At Netloria we usually suggest starting with a dozen of the strongest pieces and watching the response for a quarter before tackling the rest.

Common Mistakes

An auto-translate widget as the whole solution. A widget that translates a page on the fly creates no separate URLs — which means those pages don’t exist for search. There’ll be no traffic from the other language.

Translating half of it. Home page and services in English, blog and forms in the original language. Someone hits an incomprehensible page and leaves.

Automatic redirect by geolocation. Someone travelling abroad gets a language they don’t read, with no way back. Offer the language, don’t impose it.

Flags instead of language names. A flag denotes a country, not a language: English is hardly spoken only in Britain. Writing “English” is more reliable.

Identical metadata. Titles and descriptions copied from the original version defeat the point of having a separate page for search.

How to Check It Works

A minimum checklist that takes half an hour and catches most problems.

Open an English page and look at the URL: it should carry a language prefix or sit on a separate domain.

Check the page source for hreflang, and that it’s bidirectional — from the original to the translation and back.

Search
site:
plus your domain with the language prefix — those pages should be indexed.

Switch languages and confirm you stay on the same page rather than landing on the home page. A switcher that always goes home is irritating and breaks the journey.

Walk the whole path to an enquiry: form, confirmation, email — all in one language.

That last point fails most often. The site is in English while the confirmation email arrives in another language, and the person can’t tell whether the enquiry went through at all. At Netloria we test exactly this end-to-end path before launching any language version.

Where to Start If You’ve Decided to Do It

Order matters, and content doesn’t come first.

Begin by defining the market and language concretely: not “English for everyone,” but who these people are and what they’ll be searching for. Then choose the URL structure — that’s the most expensive decision to reverse. Next, build the keyword set for the new language separately: not translated, but gathered from scratch, because queries differ. And only then start on the copy.

Launch the core rather than the whole site: home page, two or three key services, contacts. That lets you test whether there’s a real response before investing in translating the entire blog. After that comes the usual work on rankings, just in the new language version, with its own queries and its own links.

If you’re considering another language and aren’t sure where to begin — get in touch. We’re a web studio based in Ukraine, running a bilingual site ourselves, and we’ll look at your analytics and existing structure before recommending anything. It often turns out the place to start is two pages, not the whole site.

40% of shoppers won’t buy from sites in another language.
